Our Story

About The Kogei Shop
The Kogei Shop is a destination for Japanese artisanal tableware and home goods designed for the modern home. Pronounced koh-gay, kogei in Japanese refers to the traditional arts and crafts that have been passed down through generations.  We collaborate with master artisans across Japan to curate a collection of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that marry beauty and utility.

In today’s fast-paced, digital world, we believe that finely crafted objects can ground us in the present and enrich life’s simple rituals—like sharing a meal with loved ones in the comfort of home.  Our selection spans both new and vintage works, blending Japanese artistry with a modern sensibility. Each timeless piece honors the art of slow living and celebrates beauty in the everyday.

Our mission is to imbue beauty, joy, and meaning into the everyday while supporting the art of local craftspeople.

From Our Founder
Growing up, I loved being at the table my grandma and mom created for our family and guests, with delicious home cooked dishes served in beautiful tableware over lively conversations. No matter how big or small, formal or casual the gathering, those meal times were feasts for my senses - the aroma and savor of the meal, appealing tableau of dinnerware with a mix of everyday staples and seasonal or special occasion pieces, and interesting exchanges of ideas. It's an experience I have sought to recreate with my own friends and family over the years.

I also started buying and collecting ceramics from a young age, often as gifts and souvenirs from trips around the world.  Over the past 10 years, I visited many local kilns and potters across Japan whose work isn't easily accessible outside of the country, adding to my personal collection and often mixing it with contemporary and vintage Scandinavian pieces.

So, after a 20+ year grind in the corporate world, I decided to launch
The Kogei Shop. It was born from my love of bringing people together and of tableware that are beautiful and practical. I hope these pieces find a place in your home and fill your heart with joy.
